Les influences de The Hateful Eight

Du marché du film américain, on n'a retenu que les propos de Tarantino sur sa volonté de partir en retraite cinématographique après 10 films. La rumeur faisant son travail, je lis même ça et là que les Hateful sera le dernier film du cinéaste. Petite mise au point chiffrée: The Hateful Eight sera le 8ème film de Tarantino (si l'on est raisonnable et que l'on ne compte ni le sketch de Four Rooms, ni Kill Bill comme deux films) après Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds et Django Unchained (1+1+1+1+1+1+1=7). A relayer des propos déformés, on en oublierait presque que Tarantino a aussi dit que si un projet en valait le coup, il reviendrait bien évidemment pour un onzième, douzième ou treizième film (comme Besson et Soderbergh qui n'en finissent plus de tourner depuis qu'ils ont annoncé vouloir arrêter...).

A parler retraite, on est passé à côté du plus intéressant puisque Tarantino a aussi profité des micros pour parler des influences de The Hateful Eight, chose bien plus importante à mon sens. Si le nom du projet évoquait une filiation avec les 7 mercenaires (ou samouraïs) et le pitch enneigé des liens avec Corbucci, il n'en sera rien à l'écran, Tarantino évoquant plus volontiers la filiation série TV de son enfance:

“It’s less inspired by one Western movie than by Bonanza, The Virginians, High Chaparral, Twice per season, those shows would have an episode where a bunch of outlaws would take the lead characters hostage. They would come to the Ponderosa and hold everybody hostage, or to go Judge Garth’s place–Lee J. Cobb played him–in The Virginians, and take hostages. There would be a guest star like David Carradine, Darren McGavin, Claude Akins, Robert Culp, Charles Bronson or James Coburn. I don’t like that storyline in a modern context, but I love it in a Western where you would pass halfway through the show to find out if they were good or bad guys, and they all had a past that was revealed. “I thought, what if I did a movie starring nothing but those characters? No heroes, no Michael Landons. Just a bunch of nefarious guys in a room, all telling back stories that may or may not be true. Trap those guys together in a room with a blizzard outside, give them guns, and see what happens.”
